The Gift of Creativity

So God created human beings in his own image.  In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. ~Genesis 1:27

 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. ~Romans 12:6a

Although I have written about creativity before, it’s such an important topic for me that I want to share some more thoughts on the subject.  I am finding some irony in the fact that, as I begin to write about this subject, I am not feeling especially creative.  I have been sick this week and, therefore, my inspiration to write has been slightly dulled.  In spite of that, I am going to type out my thoughts and pray that God uses them for His will.

God, our amazing Heavenly Father, is the Master Creator.  He created heaven and earth and everything in between.   When God created mankind, He made us in His image.  He gave each of us the gift of creativity,  and He breathed life into our bodies so that we could live lives that celebrate and use this wonderful gift for His glory.

We are all creative.  Some people are gifted with creativity in the arts. Other people are gifted with other kinds of creativity.  Many of you may not recognize your own creativity because it doesn’t fit the world’s definition of what it means to be creative.  I was blessed to have been raised in a family that encouraged creative expression.  We were allowed to discover and explore the gift of creativity God had placed in each of us.  Then we were taught to use our gift to bless those around us.

If you are a visual artist, you can create art that brings beauty and joy to others.  If you are a mother or a teacher, you can use your gift of creativity to inspire and encourage young people to achieve their dreams.  If you are a gardener, you can design gardens that bring beauty to your neighborhood or community.  If you are a problem-solver, your gift of creativity can be a blessing to people dealing with difficult situations.  If you are a caregiver, your creativity can aid you in providing the best care possible, while leaving you time to take care of yourself.  If you are a scientist, your ability to imagine possibilities can bring about important discoveries for our world.  If you are a gifted communicator, you can use words creatively to inspire, encourage, and uplift the people you are speaking to.

If you haven’t yet figured out the way you were made to be creative, do some exploring.  Pray for discernment.  Ask your friends and family to help you.  It doesn’t matter what kind of creativity you were given.  What matters is that you embrace your creative nature and use it to make the world around you a better place.  When you use your creative abilities (whatever they may be) in positive ways, you are giving back to the Creator.
