God’s DNA

So God created human beings in his own image.  In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  ~Genesis 1:27 NLT

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!  ~Galatians 5:22-23

Have you ever been told you look just like your mom or dad?   Your sister or brother?  Another relative?  I’m frequently told I look just like my mom (and I do).  I also look a lot like one of my brothers.  And yet, I’m different.  Both of my parents, and all six of my siblings, have blue eyes.  I do not.  My eyes are hazel like my great-grandfather’s eyes.  Why?  Because that’s the color my DNA told them to be.  I find that fascinating.

My husband and I were given the gift of DNA testing for our birthdays a couple of years ago.  His sister wanted to see how her DNA compared to the DNA of her two brothers.  The results were interesting.  Of course the DNA testing showed that they shared a DNA heritage, but the distribution was different for each of them.  They aren’t identical, just related.

Our DNA determines our physical characteristics, such as height, hair color, eye color, etc.  It can make us more susceptible to certain illnesses and more resistant to others.  I believe our DNA can also determine at least some of our personality traits.  Our DNA is unique to each of us, and yet, it can prove our connection to others that share the same DNA heritage.  When my DNA was entered into ancestry.com‘s database, I received a message that a probable relative was also in the system.  The DNA match belonged to one of my nieces.

I believe that as people, we all share a common DNA heritage—God’s DNA.  The Bible tells us that God created us in His own image.  He designed us to share some of His characteristics.  God designed us each to be unique, and yet obviously connected through Him.

When people who know me meet my mom, they know right away that I am her child.  When you look at me, you can see her.  As a follower of Christ, and a child of our Heavenly Father, my connection to God should be as obvious as my connection to my mother.  When people look at me, they should see evidence of my relationship to God.  What kind of evidence should they see?  If I allow the Holy Spirit to work in me, God’s DNA will produce traits like: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  If these fruits of the Spirit are apparent in me, my connection to God will be seen by others.  Then, when someone looks at me, they will see a little of my Heavenly Father.

Let’s allow God’s DNA to shine through each of us so that the world will know who God is, and will seek their own connection to Him.

Be blessed!
